Prep for March

Did any of you go outside today?  Cold. Windy. Cold. Sunny. Cold.

My tasks today in Tribeca were to remove the christmas lights that wrapped the six trees on the deck, clean up the loose debis and remove browning holly branches.

As I began taking down the lights, the client and I discussed the option of keeping the old lights for next year or cutting them off and starting fresh next Christmas.
In the end, we decided that cutting them off would be quicker and next years lights would be L.E.D.
In comparison, the typical holiday light strand will last about 3,000 hours and an L.E.D. light can last about 50,000 hours as well as uses about 1/10 less electrical current than the commonly used incandescent lights.  Go Green!!
Going through the beds, I cleaned out the old holly sprigs and checked for early bulbs.

Most of the bulbs are still deep underground frozen and waiting for warm weather.  These few were coming up under the maple tree on the deck.  If my memory is correct, I planted yellow pixie irises and I think a few deep purple crocuses.  These little guys are no taller than 7" when in full bloom.  I hope they hold out for another few weeks!

Flanking the door to the house is a wall trellis with two climbing hydrangeas.  They have palm size round leaves with flat 6" white lace like blooms.  For now, they are brown woody branches with buds ready to go.  A few have tiny little leaves starting to burst.

After three hours in the Hudson River winds, I called it quits and came home for some paperwork and a nap.  Oh the winter gardeners life.

...

Tomorrow I am receiving two french lavenders, a 2' spruce and all the railing racks from a client who is moving from his small balconied apartment.  His new apartment has no outdoor access so we are planning on making three to four terrariums for his window sills.  Exciting!

Today was a sunny spring-like day with hardly a cloud in the sky.  Folks in the neighborhood were all smiles today, excited by the idea of spring on its way.

All I could think about was wanting the temps to drop to keep my bulbs in the ground.

This past fall I had planted thousands of bulbs; tulips, crocuses, irises, alliums and so on in Brooklyn Planting's gardens... If the warm weather teases them out of the ground too soon, they are at risk of being frozen and killed before they are able to bloom.  This would be terrible!!!

The outlook calls for sleet/rain/snow/freezing... just what I like to hear!

Don't get me wrong, I'm excited to get out there and start up season two of Brooklyn Planting, but in due time.  I am making my rounds this week to check on the winter progress, clean things up a bit and perhaps take note of big "To Do's" for this spring.

More to come...

Another indoor planting

I finished my latest indoor planting job... It looks just so sweet and interesting.

I had created this 12'' round succulent mix... when inside its pot, the burro tail will trail over the sides in long thick bundles and the skinny upright arms of the Echeraria Nudolosa will bloom four tiny orange flowers.

I placed it inside this hand made copper basin on the client's dining room table.  It looks just right.
Too bad about my fuzzy picture.  I'll get over there in the next week or two to take new photos...
This next set of plants sat on the floor in front of her fireplace.

The Pothos (below) will grow tied up on a wooden stake and letting a few spill around the pot which was hand made by the clients father.
The Peperomia (below left) was a great find.  It's a super low maintenance plant... watering only when the soil is quite dry, about once every 10 days in the winter.

So, about watering... The client asked about her peace lily that looked a bit thin and unhappy... She asked if she should water more.
When we touched the soil, the very top layer was lightly moist, but when I dug my fingers down an inch, it was sopping wet...

Over watering is a major problem with house plants.

Depending on the plant,
  •  give it about a week between watering of the indoor plants, more in the warm months less in the colder.
  •   Make sure you have proper drainage, a big hole in the bottom of the pot, rocks, sand if needed
  • let the plant speak to you.  some leaves just droop when they need water, some get crispy edges... it's easier to fix a low water situation than an over-watered rotting mess
A great place to ask a question is www.gardenweb.com.

Pets and Plants

...they might not mix.

My sweet little cats are actually terrors and want to get at and knock over anything that they shouldn't.
They both love to nibble on my collection of ferns and succulents...
I have been aware of what plants will give them stomach aches and which could possibly kill them.

This is a website that has a good list of which plants are poisonous.
Just do a little research before you bring in plants to your home.

It could be different for dogs since they eat rocks and don't seem to mind... just be aware.

http://www.cfainc.org/articles/plants.html

oh! NEVER EVER let them be around the lily flower... just having the pollen on their fur can be detrimental!!!

Step One

I went to the flower district to buy three low light plants for the floor and a selection of succulents.

From left to right: Peperomia, Pothos (green in back center), Prayer Plant, Burro Tail. There are three more succulents not in the photo, a 5'' Haworthia, 4'' Agavoides and an Echeveria Nudolosa.

It was SO SO SO cold yesterday. Central Park was -6 degrees Fahrenheit!!! And that wind!

At least it feels like winter, I'd like some snow, but the cold temps are just fine.

I have lots of work to do by the end of the week.
  • Finish this planting job.
  • Check on my Tribeca garden
  • Prep my taxes/Bills in and out
  • Clean out my window boxes (shameful)
  • Continue the never-ending organization of the Brooklyn Planting office
  • Back up ALL my computer files on my external hard drive. oh my
  • Plan my out-of-town adventure

The Tank fell!

I'm so happy it's Monday.

Last week I finished a proposal for an indoor planting job which I will start today with a trip to the flower district and hopefully install tomorrow.

It's going to be a smooth project, but I was a little out of sorts yesterday due to a major technical issue.
You see, I was getting ready to leave the house when somehow my foot got wrapped around my power adapter cord as I walked away causing my laptop to plunge to the floor!!!

At first I was like, eh, I'll just go about my business and deal with this later.
Then the magnitude of what I had just done hit me.
All of my garden photos from the last three months had not been backed up yet, all my proposals ever had never been moved to my external hard drive, my years of bookmarking great websites or wholesalers, tax info, my music... the list went on and on; from business to personal files that I would have desperately needed and misssed!

I began to freak out.

Thankfully, my winter season forced me to work a weekend job at Mikey's Hook Up in the neighborhood!  We sell and repair Apple products and such.
So, I called my coworkers in a tizzy at 9:30pm.
These guys are amazing, not only did they calm me down, they got me laughing and seeing that this major issue could just be a catapult into something good.
They told me to come by early the next morning and they would take a look at my damaged goods.

It only took the technician 5 minutes to get it up and running.  Apparently my laptop has an amazingly shock resistant plastic shell.  There was no damage to the actual computer or ram.
I have always called my Ibook G4 "The Tank" and it totally lived up to it's name.
I purchased a new power adapter with my discount and I was on my way, back to normal!

I love you guys at the Hook Up.  If you need an Apple computer, any computer accessories or music accouterments, come by Mikey's.  There are two stores, one on N6th and the other is by my home/office on Graham Avenue.  These guys know what you need and will make you laugh while you get it.
We just got the new Air in if you wanna try it out or just come by if you want to play a game of Ping Pong.

Recap and lessons learned:
  • The "mag power adapters" were invented for this very reason.  They mount with a magnet and release with a light tug.  Too bad my laptop was designed/purchased before the mag adapters came out.
  • Remember to back up ALL my files.  iphoto, itunes, word documents, everything!
  • Trust that my former self, who chose to get a job at an electronics shop, was a smart woman who decided to step outside my realm and school myself in a new vocabulary beyond the plant and design world.
  • Know that without my laptop, I would and could still live and work.
  • Again. Remember to back up ALL MY FILES! I'll do that today.

Groundhogs day, y'all

Happy groundhogs day everyone!!  MAJOR HOLIDAY and a really good movie.

February started off nicely with a sunny morning that bathed my houseplants with the much needed winter sunlight.  It's nice to have a little indoor garden all year round.

...

I have been visiting my favorite secret rooftop garden a lot these days.  It's here in my neighborhood, it boasts a water feature, wicker couches, a hanging porch swing and a gorgeous view of Manhattan.   Once I saw a pontoon plane land in the East River from that rooftop!

On this past visit I picked a few sprigs of sedum to add to my vintage hanging container.  The large succulent in this photo has been living in this glass bowl for the past year, it needed a little something.

It just makes for a well rounded space, even if it's only 4 inches large and your only choosing a shell.  Be thoughtful!
I hope those little guys do well!  I also put a mat of moss around it all... requiring a whole lot of misting... it's great fun.
...

ALSO!!! My good friend and artist, Laura Bellmont, made a statue for my terrarium!  It's Persephone, the Greek goddess of the Underworld!  Ms. Bellmont always impresses me.  I just love the way it looks.

I am having Laura make a bunch of statues for a set of terrariums I will be making this March for a client.  These will be bold color bursts inside bell jars.

Keep up with the blog to see what happens!!
